Martin Scorsese makes movies as if his life depends on it, never skimping on ferocity and feeling. From Mean Streets to The Departed, Scorsese's crime films turn the genre on its empty head, shaking out the clichés to uncover the violence of the mind. His latest, Shutter Island, sizzles with so much nerve-frying suspense that it's hot to the touch. The time is 1954. The place is Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, located off Boston Harbor on a remote island that's locked as tight as Alcatraz. A Category 5 hurricane is brewing as U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), ferry in to capture Rachel Solando, a killer of her own children who's escaped from her cell. The Gothic terror kicks in when the storm literally breaks down walls and the patients run amok, along with their darkest secrets. See it twice and double your fun. Just don't expect your head to stop spinning.

Cinema is in Scorsese's DNA, so movie lovers can play a game finding references that extend through film noir (Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past), horror (Val Lewton's The Seventh Victim), war trauma (Karl Malden's Time Limit), phantasmagoria (Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor), Hollywood's version of asylum life (Anatole Litvak's Snake Pit) and the terrifying real thing in Frederick Wiseman's landmark documentary Titicut Follies.

You don't need to know any of these films to appreciate Shutter Island, since Scorsese reshapes them into something uniquely his own. But those references tip you off that the director is hunting bigger game than thrills. Set in a time of lobotomy surgery, radical drug experiments, mind-control conspiracies, Cold War paranoia and A-bomb dread, the film demands that you stay alert if you want to stay ahead of the bombshell climax. No hints, figure it out yourself.

DiCaprio, in his most haunting and emotionally complex performance yet, is the vessel Scorsese uses to lead us through the film's labyrinth. Adapted from Dennis Lehane's novel by Laeta Kalogridis (Pathfinder), the twisty — maybe too twisty — script lets us know Teddy is a hard-drinking World War II vet with a quick fist. And flashbacks to his strained marriage to Dolores (Michelle Williams) show equal trauma at home. But mostly we see Teddy during his four days on Shutter Island. Seasick on the ferry in, Teddy tries to get to know his new partner (Ruffalo is reliably superb). The byplay between these two gifted actors rewards careful attention.

On the island, the marshals meet Ashecliffe's head man, Dr. Cawley, played by Ben Kingsley with just the right blend of wry wit and menace. To Cawley, everyone is a potential patient. His eyes seem to be everywhere. The great Max Von Sydow has the role of Dr. Naehring, who brings with him the aura of Nazi threat. It doesn't take long for Teddy to figure nothing is what it seems.

It takes a hurricane to knock down barriers. Teddy's meeting with the patient Noyce (the excellent Jackie Earle Haley) shakes him, as do his two encounters with the murderous Rachel, played by two exceptional actresses, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson. DiCaprio's scene in a cave with the terrific Clarkson is one of the film's dramatic highlights. It puts the audience in Teddy's position, caught between reality and hallucination.

With the help of cinematographer Robert Richardson, production designer Dante Ferretti, music supervisor Robbie Robertson and editing whiz Thelma Schoonmaker, Scorsese holds us in a vise-like grip. The climactic scene won't be the only thing that leaves you shattered. Scorsese makes dark magic in this mesmerizing mind-bender. No one who lives and breathes movies would dream of missing it.

In a nutshell: Jennifer Aniston's status as a bankable movie star has seen plenty of ups and downs since Friends ended in 2004, but last year's Marley & Me delivered her biggest hit so far, and it's not surprising to see her now heading up this big-budget action romcom. She plays investigative reporter Nicole, who believes there's more than meets the eye to the apparent suicide of an employee from a police evidence room. Shame that she failed to attend her own court appearance over a traffic offence, and now has a bounty hunter tasked with bringing her in – specifically Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler), her hated ex-husband. With Nicole and Milo forced to spend time together once again, will their long-extinguished love rekindle?

What's good about it? As she's already proved, Aniston can add warmth to a character that is thinly written on the page (Marley & Me) or exhibits potentially unappealing controlling tendencies (The Break-Up). She can also cook up decent chemistry with the most unlikely of male co-stars (even Paul Rudd playing her gay housemate in 1998's The Object Of My Affection). Butler is repeating the redeemable boor he played in last year's The Ugly Truth, but you'll still want these two to get back together. Handy that as, this being a romcom, that is exactly what is bound to happen.

What's not so good? As is so often the case with this genre, neither of the lead characters are particularly funny, leaving the various supporting players to do the comedy heavy lifting. Christine Baranski is good value as Nicole's Atlantic City showgirl mother; Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live) tries his best with Nicole's dopey, besotted colleague. Then this not-terribly-comedic film becomes less funny when the action element kicks into high gear, with the pair caught up in a plot involving a corrupt cop, a scary tattoo artist and an irate debt collector. None of this would matter were it not for the film's one really serious flaw: its dispiriting paucity of originality.

Verdict: Hollywood journeyman Andy Tennant's last movie was the feeble action romcom Fool's Gold, with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. This one is a slight improvement, elevated by a pair of likeable lead actors, but should we really be encouraging Hollywood studios to make more of the same?

Le autorità di polizia, sostenute da un'opinione pubblica desiderosa di rassicuranti lieto fine, insistono nella loro versione fino a decidere di internare Christine attribuendole disturbi mentali che l'avrebbero spinta a non riconoscere nel sedicente Walter il proprio figlio.

Christine però non si arrende e, sostenuta dal reverendo Guistav Briegleb, continua a lottare perché le ricerche di Walter continuino.
La sinossi che avete appena letto sembrerebbe essere il frutto della creatività di un buon sceneggiatore di Hollywood invece si tratta della pura e semplice realtà. Una realtà che lo sceneggiatore J. Michael Straczynski ha riportato in luce grazie alla segnalazione di un amico che lo ha informato che numerose carte processuali di cause tenutesi negli anni Venti a Los Angeles stavano per andare al macero e che, tra queste, c'erano gli atti di un processo che avrebbe potuto interessargli.

Così la vicenda della lavoratrice Christine Collins in lotta contro l'arroganza di una polizia corrotta ed incapace può inscriversi come nuovo ritratto nella lunga serie di figure alla ricerca di giustizia che il cinema americano ha portato sullo schermo. Il nobile cavaliere Clint Eastwood non poteva non interessarsi a una simile vicenda. Essa contiene numerosi elementi che costituiscono la base dell'etica eastwoodiana: l'individuo solo contro il Potere corrotto, l'infanzia segnata da traumi irreparabili, il rapporto tra il sistema sanitario e i pazienti/oggetto, la pena di morte.

Senza aver bisogno di citare il relativamente recente Mystic River basta andare con la memoria a Un mondo perfetto per avere la prova di come le sofferenze inflitte ai più piccoli stiano da tempo a cuore al regista. In questa occasione il repubblicano Clint sembra però voler lavorare su un doppio registro. Da un lato narra l'impari lotta dell'individuo nei confronti di un potere che si arroga qualsiasi diritto di limitazione delle libertà in nome di presunte esigenze di sicurezza (e qui le misure adottate dall'amministrazione Bush non possono non venire in mente).

Dall'altro, dopo una cruda e significativa sequenza sull'esecuzione di un serial killer, sembra aver desiderio di rileggere i sentimenti e i legami familiari con uno sguardo che ha bisogno di rivolgersi a un passato in cui l'imperitura arroganza del Potere poteva vedersi contrastare da una solidarietà popolare e da una determinazione nella ricerca della verità che oggi sembrano essersi drasticamente ridimensionate. Clint non smette di ricordarci che i diritti individuali non devono 'mai' venire calpestati. Lo fa, in questa occasione, riuscendo anche a commuoverci.
